Inkscape

Some time ago I downloaded Inkscape, a free “Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw”. I hate learning new things and because I’m so familiar with PSP, I wasn’t really willing to give Inkscape a try. But I opened the program, tried some things, made a mess, closed it again and forgot about it :p

Until I found verysimpledesigns.com, a site with such a cute doll tutorial, I just HAD to make it. Me wanting the doll was stronger than me hating Inkscape, so I opened the program again and started reading the tutorial.

During the tutorial I found feats I loved! Aligning objects is a breeze, filling and changing colors is so easy (that is, after I found out what I was doing wrong about 100 times :p). It took me a few hours to finish the tut. And I looove my doll – even though she’s not perfect. But for a first try, it’ll do! 🙂

I already saw several other tuts I want to try. For now, here’s my Kokeshi doll:

  3. She’s gorgeous Antoinette. I can see why you had to make her. What did Inkscape have that PSP couldn’t do?

  5. Thanks Jill, I know I’ll be busy learning for a looong time!

A lot, Karen, more pros than cons.
The most amazing thing is that you can move objects with the arrow keys and aligning objects is so easy (I have always trouble aligning things in PSP).
What I didn’t like is that there isn’t a ‘layer overview’, but maybe that option is there and I just haven’t found it yet (or perhaps the option isn’t needed and I have to drop thinking in PSP).
The sleeves of the doll’s dress started as circles, then you change the radius (if I remember it well) and you get different shapes.
I’m fully aware that I’ve just used a small percentage of Inkscape’s possibilites, and I have to push myself doing tutorials, but I know for sure I’ll use Inkscape for future scrap-projects.
In short: I can highly recommend it!

  7. Hi Antoinette,

You should have left a link to your result in your comment on the tut site 🙂 I think you completed the tut perfectly. She’s lovely.

I agree with you that Inkscape is a program with a lot of opportunities. There is a layer view too, but I did not use it in this absolute beginner tutorial.

    Thanks for posting.

    Cheers,
    Syllie
