Serious Request

Can’t remember if I ever wrote about Serious Request.. don’t think so though.
For the non-Dutch visitors of my Blog, I´ll explain.
For six years now one of the Dutch radio stations organizes a nationwide appeal, Radio 3FM Serious Request, the week before Christmas. Three DJs are locked into a ‘Glass House’ and spend a week there without food (they only get vitamin drinks, and doctors look after their well being).
They take turns – 24 hours a day – to present the 3FM Serious Request Radio Show, which is even broadcast life at one of the Dutch TV stations (to me, the best life television of the year!).
You can text or call and request a record, but you have to pay. That can vary from $1 out of a kid’s piggy-bank, up to.. well anything is possible. Thousands of people come to the house to deliver their request ánd the money themselves.
The money goes to a good course – last year the Red Cross used it for the prevention of malaria. Holland started the Serious Request appeal, but last year there were Glass Houses in Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden and Kenia.
Every year the Dutch Glass House is build in a different city. And this year my hometown is one of the cities that’s willing to host the event. There are other cities competing too, but of course LEIDEN is the best!
Last year the Dutch event took place in Groningen and The Netherlands raised 7.113.447,- Euro (about 9.786065 USD) but Leiden is determined to beat that 😉
